Well, first it was "Seeing Red", (which I loved as a title), then "Vue Rouge", which is a much milder but far too pretentious title in my humble opinion, and now finally, "Waiting".
Why change the title of a painting? Why bother? Why fuss about it? Because the title of a painting is far more important than most people might assume. It is the summary, basically, of what that painting is all about. It is the artist's final way of expressing what he/she was thinking whilst creating their work of art. In other words, it is the window into the artist's mind. Now why did I change the title of my latest work? Ask my husband. He didn't like the original "Seeing Red" title because it sounded "too angry". I didn't see it that way at all but rather a creative way to show the viewer why this particular reference photo I took appealed to me to begin with. Next, because the man is sitting outside of a coffee shop called "Pret a Manger" the French derivative "Vue Rouge" was then selected. But that just niggled away at me for days, weeks. I didn't like it. It spoke nothing at all about what this painting meant to me as the artist. And it felt too "uppity", as if I was trying to impress people. Yesterday I decided to change the title, once again, so it would feel right. The result: "Waiting". Not so much as a window into my mind, however, but rather a summary . Take a closer look above the man and see the lady in the window....what is she doing? This painting is the start of a new series. It is all about taking candid photos of people on the streets of London, doing ordinary things, and yet...not so ordinary if you take a closer look. I want to chronicle humanity as it is today, much like Rockwell did years ago. Indeed, you will be seeing very interesting paintings from here on out. Enjoy.
